Oh, I agree. It seemed that when somebody first got on the bus (at least during the time I did in the early 80's), a few folks at the front always handed them a copy of Cornell and said "This Is The Holy Grail and You Will Bow Before It", not letting them sit down until they promised to always include it in a list of their top five shows. Well, as time has passed and access to so many more shows has grown, it seems that this initial brainwashing has faded and more and more folks are saying the same thing: "This is one hell of a show, no doubt, but I have 10 others I can point to right off the bat that I like better."

Time plus Volume will have an effect on a show like this. Ask a group what the best movie of all time is and if most say Citizen Kane the rest will counter with Godfather. It's a battle that can't be won. With that said, and i have no data to support, i would guess if you polled most deadheads this show would average a top 5 rating. Not sure if I can point to another gig that would match that. Again, personal opinion.

But it's not even my favorite show of that week, month and year - I prefer the Boston Garden show. I understand why others prefer Cornell, but I find myself reaching for Boston Garden more often (think because of the first set Peggy-O)

now you're throwing Gone with the Wind into my Godfather/Citizen Kane analogy. I wasn't prepared for that. That entire week is off the charts. I'm sure someone will throw out Buffalo too, which could contain the best Comes a time ever played. Timing could be a factor. I got Cornell as one of my first tapes and it hooked me from the start. All I know is I'm psyched for that st stephen>NFA>st stephen

Excellent point.

Except that the real answer is "Casablanca".
